Sofia Maldonado is a Puerto Rican painter and abstract muralist whose work uses color as a signifier rather than a beautifying agent. Many of Maldonado’s site-specific paintings focus on neglected or under-appreciated spaces, transforming them into bright landscapes that break down traditional barriers of space and movement. Maldonado relies on an industrial paint sprayer and calligraphic brush strokes to complete her trademark style and scale, which roam triumphantly over the walls, ceilings, and floors of her mural spaces. Maldonado has created mural projects in partnership with the Bronx Museum, Times Square Art Alliance, and the Havana Biennial, and she has exhibited artworks in galleries worldwide including the Whitney Biennial. In 2017, Maldonado launched an artist in residence program, Hielo, in her homeland.
